Google has updated its reCAPTCHA, anti-bot system to cut down on the number of times it needs to ask you to identify distorted text. It turns out the bots are getting better at reading distorted text, as good as 98.9% accurate. Google, meanwhile, has developed advanced risk analysis of users’ behaviour which allows it give most humans a pass, simply asking them to tick a box that says ‘I’m not a robot’.

Nothing’s foolproof of course, but it’s all about the balance of probabilities. Some bots will get through, and sometimes reCAPTCHA will decide it needs more proof of non-botness and serve up a puzzle for you to solve.
