Google announced earlier today that it will be closing down Orkut in September.

Orkut was Google’s first foray into social networks, long before social networks were really called social networks. The site was originally launched back in 2004 and over time it gained popularity in Brazil more than in English speaking countries.

I’ll be honest – I haven’t seen anyone reference Orkut or post a link to Orkut for a very long time. It’s usually only referenced in relation to Google’s history with social networks.

So if you have an Orkut account you will be able to access it from now until September and download the content before September 2016 using Google takeout.

You can read more about the closure on their official blog.
