Unless you’ve been under a rock for the last few days you’ll be aware that the US government has shut down. While a lot of reports have focussed on which services were impacted by the shut down several of the technology sites have been looking at online services.

Ars Technica reports on the apparently arbitrary impact on government sites, with some sites being shut down entirely and others not being updated.

Netcraft, however, have spotted something else. SSL certs ie. digital certificates.

With a lot of the non-essential offices and personnel not working some digital certificates have expired already and others will expire in the next few days.

One area of concern for me was the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) system, as I rely on it for gaining entry to the US. Fortunately it’s still online!
