beautieBeaut.ie is one of the pioneers of Irish blogging, an inspiration to many as a classic example of turning passion into publishing.  Not being a regular reader I was surprised to learn that they had thrown in the towel earlier this week, but just as I hear that news, it is announced that they have been saved – by a “knight in shining armour”!

On Saturday, founder Aisling McDermott had blogged that Beaut.ie was closing after eight years:

I can honestly say it’s been a blast.  Right from the start we had one of the most engaged and active audiences in Ireland.  We wrote about what we loved, what we er didn’t love and anything that needed instant, urgent discussion –  whether it was light and fluffy or state o’ the  nashun serious.

But now, she said, it was time “to move on and say goodbye”.  Loyal fans of the site reacted with shock and sadness – briefly crashing the site under the weight of traffic.

News of the closure reached Julian Douglas, MD of Entertainment.ie and the aforementioned “white knight”.  The Irish Times reports that Beaut.ie was bought by Entertainment.ie on Wednesday.  Its new owners believe it will complement their existing content.  The Times has a 32% stake in Entertainment.ie.
