Kickstarter is Launched in Ireland

Kickstarter today announced its launch to Irish creators. As of today, anyone in Ireland can launch a Kickstarter project and find support from people all over the world. Since September, Irish creators have been able to draft projects in in any of Kickstarter’s 15 creative categories — from film, design, and music, to journalism, games, and beyond — and today they can launch those projects to the public.

Several great Irish projects have launched already, including:

• A new comic book from an artist in Sligo
• A bedside charging system for all our portables
• A new children’s novel aimed at 9 – 12 year olds

“Irish people are incredibly creative, and we can’t wait to see what new works of art, innovative businesses and groundbreaking films Irish creators will bring to life using Kickstarter,” said Kickstarter CEO Yancey Strickler. “We’re so excited that Kickstarter is now available to creators in ten countries, including Ireland.”

During the last quarter (July 1 to Sept 30 2014) a total of $138,917,566 was pledged to projects, which is an average pledge of $1,509,974 per day. In that time period, 6,124 projects were successfully funded by a total of 1,079,201 backers. More than half of these backers were new to Kickstarter. During this quarter, the most funded Kickstarter project ever was successfully funded, as 62,642 people pledged $13.3 million to Ryan Grepper’s Coolest Cooler.

Since Kickstarter launched in 2009, 6.9 million people have pledged $1.3 billion, funding 69,000 creative projects. Kickstarter is now available in ten countries: Australia, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Kickstarter Basics

Each Kickstarter project is independently created and crafted by the person behind it. The filmmakers, musicians, artists, and designers you see on Kickstarter have complete control and responsibility over their projects. Every project creator sets their project’s funding goal and deadline. They spend time building their project pages, shooting their videos, and brainstorming what rewards to offer backers. When they’re ready, creators launch their project and share it with their community. If people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen. If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal, all backers’ credit cards are charged when time expires. If the project falls short, no one is charged. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing.

• The funding goal is the amount of money that a creator needs to complete their project.
• Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing. No one will be charged for a pledge towards a project unless it reaches its funding goal. This way, creators always have the budget they scoped out before moving forward.
• A creator is the person or team behind the project idea; working to bring it to life.
• Backers are folks who pledge money to join creators in bringing projects to life.
• Rewards are a creator’s chance to share a piece of their project with their backer community. Typically, these are one-of-a-kind experiences, limited editions, or copies of the creative work being produced.
