The telephone is as old as cinema, and from its beginnings has provided a very useful narrative device for the medium. Why bother to bring characters together, when they can just pick the phone? And the phone itself can become a plot point: answering a phone is a moment filled with possibilities, especially if the call is coming from inside the house!
